The Portsmouth Public Library strives to create welcoming, clean, and comfortable environments for the public. Consistent with this goal, the Library has adopted the following guidelines for the consumption of food and beverages in public areas of Library facilities:

  • As authorized by the library, food and beverages may be consumed in library meeting rooms, and special events.
  • Eating is prohibited in public areas of the library.
  • Consuming beverages from an approved container is permitted in most areas of the library. All beverages must be in an approved container or they are not permitted in the library.
  • The approved containers will be designed to reduce spills when properly used but should a spill occur, it should be reported immediately to a library employee so it can be cleaned up quickly to avoid permanent damage. Patrons who fail to comply with the library will be asked to leave the building. Patrons are liable for any damage to library property and equipment caused by beverages.
  • In the following Library areas, open or closed beverages are not permitted:
    • Local History (Due to the sensitive nature of these materials.)
    • Information Technology Computer lab.
    • Within five feet of any library owned electronic equipment.
  • Babies may be nursed or bottle-fed in the library.
  • Alcohol is not permitted in the Portsmouth Public Library.
  • Staff may have beverages at a public desk but, beverages should be kept out of sight and staff should not be consuming or handling them while interacting with a patron.

This policy is subject to revision, and can be revoked at anytime. The policy can only be maintained with everyone’s cooperation.
